Things are getting better everyday in NOLA even though we still struggle to adapt to the ever-changing conditions in the city. I am trying to recognize and prepare for the mental and physical symptoms that may intervene with my everyday life. I talked to a therapist who said that our brain is exiting “survival mode” and now trying to adapt to the changes, we may have some of these symptoms.

Physical

* Eating disturbances (more or less than usual)
* Sleep disturbances (more or less than usual)
* Sexual dysfunction
* Low energy
* Chronic, unexplained pain

Emotional

* Depression, spontaneous crying, despair and hopelessness
* Anxiety
* Panic attacks
* Fearfulness
* Compulsive and obsessive behaviors
* Feeling out of control
* Irritability, angry and resentment
* Emotional numbness
* Withdrawal from normal routine and relationships

Cognitive

* Memory lapses, especially about the trauma
* Difficulty making decisions
* Decreased ability to concentrate
* Feeling distracted
